OUT NOW Adam O'Farrill - ELEPHANT (OOYH 042)
Today is release day for Adam O’Farrill - ELEPHANT (OOYH 043) featuring Yvonne Rogers, Walter Stinson, and Russell Holzman! We loved working with Adam on his groundbreaking octet debut For These Streets (OOYH 034) last year, and as soon as he sent a preview of this new working quartet ELEPHANT we knew we wanted to be a part of it. We are honored to have him as part of the OOYH family, and the whole quartet just sounds incredible on this record. You can listen anywhere you like to listen via the link in the comments, and as always head to Bandcamp for LP, CD, and digital (limited blue LPs going very fast!). CDs have been shipping for a few weeks, and we expect LPs in hand any day now.
All the album art + design is by TJ Huff, and if you purchase physical you get a pretty sweet drawing of an elephant as part of that layout. Check the streaming link for a cover of Bibo No Aozora by Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose music was a huge influence on Adam’s composing for the record. Some very nice words about ELEPHANT:
“Elegant, exploratory, and emotionally dynamic.” —Qobuz
**** “O’Farrill’s latest is a beguiling blend of minimalist repetition, lively soloing, and rooted groove. A deeply engaging interplay.” —Ammar Kalia, DownBeat
“This superb band stretch time into abstraction as easily as they can generate dance rhythms- sometimes doing both within the space of a few bars. In fact, their creative core revolves around such contrasts, less as a conceptual framework than simply because it sounds good.” —Peter Margasak, The Wire
“There’s a directness to Elephant, an unabashed commitment to clarity, that I think will carry its message to a wider audience than O’Farrill has engaged thus far. If that sounds like qualified praise, let me be clear: I also consider it one of the most artistically compelling statements of his career.” —Nate Chinen, The Gig
Thanks for listening, we hope you enjoy this music!
